WE NEED YOU!
Better Basics is still in need of about 4 volunteers for the MORE Program and 30 volunteers for the Ready-to-Read Program. Please read the job descriptions below and contact Andrea Hubbert as soon as possible if you are interested. These programs begin NOW!
Below are brief descriptions of the programs that require volunteers and their duties:
· The MORE (Motivators of Reading Enrichment) volunteer motivates and rewards students for reading books. Fourth-grade students read books from a library placed in the classroom and complete simple book reports, which the volunteer grades from a key. The volunteer visits the classroom weekly, picks up the reports to be graded, and rewards the children with prize books for each book read successfully the previous week. Other prizes are given as incentives such as t-shirts, wrist bands, blue ribbons, etc. The program requires a weekly commitment from October through March (20 weeks) and completion of a one-hour training session.
· The Ready 2 Read volunteer encourages second-grade students to read for pleasure. A library of books provided by the Rotaract Club of Birmingham is placed in each second grade classroom in the Birmingham city school system. Twicemonthly, for approximately 30 minutes, the volunteer will visit the classroom to read a book and encourage children to continue reading from the library. This program requires a commitment of two half-hour sessions per month from September – April (16 monthly sessions). Volunteers may choose to adopt one or more classrooms.
All programs are very rewarding experiences. Should you decide to volunteer, you will choose the day of the week and time (between 8:30 – 2:00) that best fits your schedule. Attached are Volunteer Information & Commitment to Serve and Background Check Authorization forms. We are required to do a background check on all potential volunteers before they can begin. Please read this form carefully and return with the completed Commitment to Serve form. You can mail, fax, e-mail, or drop forms by our office.
